Japan has very strict regulations on the shelf life of products; items without a production date are presumed to have a shelf life of 3 years for skincare and 5 years for makeup. However, due to different manufacturer policies, some brands and products do include production dates and expiration dates.

Why is the product not sealed?

To save on resource costs, the packaging of most Japanese cosmetics and pharmaceutical products is very simple. Some facial cleansers, toothpastes, creams, etc., do not have foil seals and can be used immediately upon opening. Additionally, liquid or cream cosmetics are usually not filled to the brim, leaving about 3-4 cm below the bottle neck to prevent spillage upon opening. This is generally normal.
